As a female-focused company, it’s only natural that we’d take note when our country’s foremost champion of women’s rights releases a year-in-the-making landmark study on the state of the modern American woman. So take note we did when the comprehensive study, “A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything,” revealed that for the first time in American history, our workforce is comprised of equal numbers of men and women.

The study, conducted by California First Lady Maria Shriver in collaboration with the Center for American Progress, examines the impact of the new gender-balanced workforce and the far-reaching effects not only for women, but for the men, children, friends, parents, employers, employees, government, schools and businesses in their lives.

Maria Shriver, A Woman’s Nation founder, co-host of the annual Women’s Conference, author, and award-winning journalist, and John Podesta, president and chief executive officer of the Center for American Progress, held a press conference this morning with more than 30 bloggers to discuss this watershed moment.

Tinker, Glam Media and our network publishers were all on hand to participate in this important and thought-provoking discussion.

Among the highlights from the discussion that took place:

-Equality in the workplace is no longer a woman’s movement, but a “smart American policy”

-Despite the equality in numbers, there are lingering effects of discrimination in the workplace today with women being paid only 77 or 78 cents on the dollar

-Discrimination in the health care system is also still alive as women pay 48 percent more in private insurance market than men

-Though discrimination is alive, an astonishing three-quarters of Americans think that having more women in the workplace is a good thing, including men and employers

-70 percent of job losses are in male-dominated industries

-Younger men realize that their relationships and economics are more solid because of women’s increasingly important role in the workplace

-Our school system needs a major overhaul as short school days and summer breaks no longer work with the new American family schedule

-Women are starting businesses at a higher rate than men

Tinker and the #140Conf NOW Awards Team

“I wanted to provide a few more details on motivation and plans for the 140 Characters Conference NOW Award.

The NOW Award arose as an experiment in tracking Twittersphere merit and to supplement follower count as the measure of merit status quo. The relatively mild endorsement reflected in following someone leads to the quality versus quantity dispute. The NOW Award nomination process offers a mechanism for strong endorsement, because the nomination happens after the fact of following and requires the proactive nomination step (#140Conf vote @ <nominee>).

As a result, the NOW Award creates a “best of” followers dynamic.

Multiple means for assessing merit make sense in a context like Twitter where the number of options make trial and error navigation impossible. The growing volume of people active on Twitter meant a NOW Award along the lines of the People’s Choice Award rather than Zagat’s expert opinion route. The NOW Award team did not even attempt to shrink the pool of candidates via filtering phase as in the case of The America Idol. Anyone can nominate anyone for a NOW Award.

There have already been some surprising results as nominations seem as likely to arise for ordinary people with an active follower base as celebs with millions of followers. The NOW Award team will identify trends in order to designate ten categories in which a NOW Award will get presented at the 140 Characters Conference first night reception on October 27, 2009.

During my last visit to Japan it was clear that there is a great interest and need for a product like tinker in Japan. We met with several media companies and advertisers and the concept resonated with them all. Outside the US, Japan has the largest number of twitter users, Facebook is almost non-existent here in Japan.

Yuki and the team set out to capitalize on this opportunity and now three months later Glam Japan has officially launched jp.tinker.com.

The press conference was held at Imagine Studios, Nippon Broadcasting Systems in Tokyo on the 29th of September. It was attended by over 80 press and media organizations. Tinker has been very well received and traffic to the site has increased 10 fold since the launch.

Congratulations to the Glam Japan team for a successful launch. I would like to especially thank Keizo Mishina and Akira Futakuchi for setting up the press conference and coordinating all the press interviews, Bud Uesu and Takashi Naito for their sleepless nights getting the site ready to launch. And thank you to everyone that supported them from Glam US.

Tinker was on hand in June to participate in Jeff Pulver’s groundbreaking 140 Characters Conference, the first-ever Twitter conference that served as the launch pad for the investigation of Twitter as a growing force in business. September is a BIG month for Tinker. Not only did we just conclude our first-ever LIVE Fashion Week initiative, but we’re also gearing up for the high-tech conference of the year, DEMOfall 09, happening September 21-23rd. As a brief recap, Tinker was integrated into Glam.com’s overall fashion week coverage, providing comprehensive, real-time coverage on the emerging trends from each show. Via an all-things-Fashion Week widget (see below), Tinker was able to isolate fashion, gossip, and beauty and hair trends as they were happening. Within minutes after the show’s end, Tinker blasted out trend reports for users and media to see, containing all the must-know information and gossip from each show.

What’s more, Tinker’s customized widget enabled filtered views of the event, allowing users to view the shows from three different perspectives:

-ALL tab: users could see all tweets about the show

-FEATURED tab: users could see only tweets from fashion industry insiders, including editors, executives, celebrities, stylists and models

-GLAM NETWORK tab: users could see only tweets coming from Glam Network publishers in the tents
