Tinker Turns 1!

As we approach the anniversary of the launch of Tinker, we’d like to give you the latest on what’s been happening in the world of Tinker.
Here’s a brief recap of what we’ve been up to and how these new features benefit publishers and users like you…
New Content Sources: Previously, Tinker feeds and widgets only aggregated content from Twitter. Now Tinker widgets and feeds showcase content/posts from YouTube, Flickr, FriendFeed and Facebook. These additional feeds make for a more robust content offering and provide publishers and users with greater contextual relevancy.
New Create Flow: We have streamlined the event creation process and simplified creating Tinker widgets. The new create flow is now more intuitive, user friendly and highlights the importance of customization.
Tinker Plug-in: We are rolling out a WordPress Tinker Plugin. The plugin will have the same features and functionality as Tinker.com but publishers now won’t have to leave the Wordpress interface. This makes for easier Tinker integration to publisher sites and further streamlines the process. We plan to build plug-ins for blogger, typepad, ning and other popular blogging solutions that our publishers are using.
Functionality Highlights: In the Profile Selection, you can now feature a select user and display their tweets within a widget or an event detail page. Additionally, users have the ability to curate using Twitter Lists and Groups. restricting your event or widget to a set of predefined users
Facebook Connect, FriendFeed and Myspace OAuth: Tinker now has deep integration with Facebook, Friendfeed and MySpace. A user can now login to Tinker.com and any widget via these social mediums. Users will now be able to post to their wall, update their status and view their newsfeed alongside their Twitter updates.
Phew! Now we’d like to hear from YOU! What features or functionality would you like to see from Tinker? Leave comments here or email us at support@tinker.com

A Fashionable February

It was a fashionable February here at Tinker as we kicked off 2010 with another fantastic Fashion Week program. With the participation from our amazing Glam Network publishers and placement on 32 style vertical publisher sites, Tinker’s Fall 2010 Fashion Week coverage was a resounding success, racking up an astounding 26,657 total display hours.
Similar to last year’s Spring 2010 Fashion Week program, Tinker was integrated into Glam.com’s overall fashion week coverage, providing comprehensive, real-time coverage straight from the tents. Via an all-things-Fashion Week widget, Tinker was able to provide publishers with an additional lens into the event and unique “on the street” commentary from people actually in attendance at the tents. Our Tinker widget showcased the ever-increasing role social media is playing in the world of fashion and beyond.
The three-tabbed widget enabled filtered views of the event, allowing users to receive commentary on the shows from three different perspectives: anyone tweeting about #nyfw, select fashion industry insiders, including editors, executives, celebrities, stylists and models, and Glam Network participating publishers.
As always, we’d like to extend a big thanks to our Glam Network publishers for lending your support to our program!

A Glam Time at DLD10

DLD_banner

Each year technologists, philosophers, musicians, educators, designers, scientists and entrepreneurs from around the world gather in Munich to discuss digital innovation, science and culture at the annual DLD Conference in Munich. This year, Glam Media was proud to participate—hosting both a real-time widget on the conference homepage and having our very own technologists/founders/entrepreneurs Samir Arora and Raj Narayan speak on two high profile panels.

DLD_widgetFor remote conference participants, as well as those in attendance at DLD, a Tinker widget on the conference homepage (seen right) provided a 360 view of the event. With real-time updates from Twitter and Facebook, photos, panel vides, trend analysis and separate tabs filtered by source (press, speakers, Q&A), the Tinker widget served as a one-stop shop for all-things-DLD.

Additionally, Glam Chairman and CEO Samir Arora and co-founder Raj Narayan participated in two panels during the conference. On conference day two, Arora took part in the “Marketing” panel, exploring the changing role of marketing and advertising in the digital world. Alongside Arora were marketing executives from Nike, Vivaki, BBDO, ABC Group and Mercedes Benz, who collectively declared that consumer is “judge and jury” when it comes to marketers and advertisers—a shift from the “Mad Men” era of brands and advertising dictating to consumers.

On day three, Narayan participated in the Jeff Pulver-moderated “Real-Time” panel alongside fellow “now media” explorers Loic Le Meur of Seesmic and Baratunde Thursten of The Onion. Pulver and panelists discussed three main points in relation to real-time media—the need to go beyond the geeks to address mainstream real-time users, the importance of applying filters to sort through the influx of real-time information, and the creativity real-time platforms like Twitter and Facebook enable.

New Year, New Features

Over the past couple of weeks, Tinker engineers have been working tirelessly to improve the user functionality on Tinker.com. And today we are announcing Phase 1 of our push, which includes both updates to the Create Event process and two new features, My Dashboard and Widgets.
The primary motivation for this release was to streamline event creation and offer both consumers and Tinker publishers more widget options. The new create flow is now more intuitive and our widgets give users several options to create a custom widget that best fits their site needs.
Here’s a sample of our new widgets….
Search Widget: Display search results in real-time with a keyword or set of keywords.
Event Widget: Ideal for major events like a conference or meet-up, this widget provides an all-inclusive functionality – pulling in tweets based on keywords, lists, or profiles.
News Widget: Choose a news category (i.e. Entertainment) and the widget will showcase all tweets relating to that story (Currently Reuters). Follow the widget as it updates in real-time.
In addition, the My Dashboard feature now provides Tinker users with more comprehensive data on their events and widgets. Users can now not only manage their Twitter profile via their dashboard, but they can also edit their events and widgets and retrieve metrics on event performance.
In the next couple of weeks we plan to release Phase 2, which will result in a deeper integrated platform, with our widgets pulling in from multiple social mediums, in addition to more valuable analytics. Stay tuned!

Tinker VP of Engineering Participates in MySQL Webinar

Picture 1Last week Glam Media/Tinker VP of Engineering Raj Narayan participated in a technical webinar with Gear6, MySQL and Sun Microsystems to share how large dynamic companies like Glam are able to rapidly scale. Along with Bill Takacs of Gear6 and Jimmy Guerrero of Sun Microsystems, Raj shared how Glam Media, the 2nd fastest growing US-based web property (2008), utilizes MySQL as a critical piece of infrastructure—supporting nearly half a billion hits per day. Additionally, Raj discussed Glam’s leverage of Memcached and Gear6 to alleviate MySQL database load and scale the site to handle over 115 million unique visitors a month. Battle of the Sexes? “A Woman’s Nation” Calls a Truce

Picture 3

As a female-focused company, it’s only natural that we’d take note when our country’s foremost champion of women’s rights releases a year-in-the-making landmark study on the state of the modern American woman. So take note we did when the comprehensive study, “A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything,” revealed that for the first time in American history, our workforce is comprised of equal numbers of men and women.

The study, conducted by California First Lady Maria Shriver in collaboration with the Center for American Progress, examines the impact of the new gender-balanced workforce and the far-reaching effects not only for women, but for the men, children, friends, parents, employers, employees, government, schools and businesses in their lives.

Maria Shriver, A Woman’s Nation founder, co-host of the annual Women’s Conference, author, and award-winning journalist, and John Podesta, president and chief executive officer of the Center for American Progress, held a press conference this morning with more than 30 bloggers to discuss this watershed moment.

Tinker, Glam Media and our network publishers were all on hand to participate in this important and thought-provoking discussion.

Among the highlights from the discussion that took place:

-Equality in the workplace is no longer a woman’s movement, but a “smart American policy”

-Despite the equality in numbers, there are lingering effects of discrimination in the workplace today with women being paid only 77 or 78 cents on the dollar

-Discrimination in the health care system is also still alive as women pay 48 percent more in private insurance market than men

-Though discrimination is alive, an astonishing three-quarters of Americans think that having more women in the workplace is a good thing, including men and employers

-70 percent of job losses are in male-dominated industries

-Younger men realize that their relationships and economics are more solid because of women’s increasingly important role in the workplace

-Our school system needs a major overhaul as short school days and summer breaks no longer work with the new American family schedule

-Women are starting businesses at a higher rate than men

Tinker and the #140Conf NOW Awards Team

A Note from Jeff Pulver

Jeff Pulver—social media guru, founder of the 140 Characters Conference and mastermind behind the #140Conf NOW Awards—delivers a special message about the NOW awards…

“I wanted to provide a few more details on motivation and plans for the 140 Characters Conference NOW Award.

The NOW Award arose as an experiment in tracking Twittersphere merit and to supplement follower count as the measure of merit status quo. The relatively mild endorsement reflected in following someone leads to the quality versus quantity dispute. The NOW Award nomination process offers a mechanism for strong endorsement, because the nomination happens after the fact of following and requires the proactive nomination step (#140Conf vote @ <nominee>).

As a result, the NOW Award creates a “best of” followers dynamic.

Multiple means for assessing merit make sense in a context like Twitter where the number of options make trial and error navigation impossible. The growing volume of people active on Twitter meant a NOW Award along the lines of the People’s Choice Award rather than Zagat’s expert opinion route. The NOW Award team did not even attempt to shrink the pool of candidates via filtering phase as in the case of The America Idol. Anyone can nominate anyone for a NOW Award.

There have already been some surprising results as nominations seem as likely to arise for ordinary people with an active follower base as celebs with millions of followers. The NOW Award team will identify trends in order to designate ten categories in which a NOW Award will get presented at the 140 Characters Conference first night reception on October 27, 2009.

In any case, in context of refining 140Conf NOW Award experiment, please participate by nominating your favorites and forward comments or suggestions for improvement.

Best regards, Jeff”

Tinker in Tokyo

What a month it has been for Glam Japan! First Glam Mobile and now Tinker.

tinkerjapan-blog

During my last visit to Japan it was clear that there is a great interest and need for a product like tinker in Japan. We met with several media companies and advertisers and the concept resonated with them all. Outside the US, Japan has the largest number of twitter users, Facebook is almost non-existent here in Japan.

Yuki and the team set out to capitalize on this opportunity and now three months later Glam Japan has officially launched jp.tinker.com.

The press conference was held at Imagine Studios, Nippon Broadcasting Systems in Tokyo on the 29th of September. It was attended by over 80 press and media organizations. Tinker has been very well received and traffic to the site has increased 10 fold since the launch.

Congratulations to the Glam Japan team for a successful launch. I would like to especially thank Keizo Mishina and Akira Futakuchi for setting up the press conference and coordinating all the press interviews, Bud Uesu and Takashi Naito for their sleepless nights getting the site ready to launch. And thank you to everyone that supported them from Glam US.

Go Tinker! Go Glam Japan!!

140 Characters Conference LA + The NOW Awards

140confnow_560x80-copy_blog

Tinker was on hand in June to participate in Jeff Pulver’s groundbreaking 140 Characters Conference, the first-ever Twitter conference that served as the launch pad for the investigation of Twitter as a growing force in business. Die hard members of the Twitterati, media personalities, celebrities and regular folks alike came together to discuss and at times heatedly debate the effects of Twitter on media, celebrity, advertising and more.

Tinker’s proud to again participate in the 140 Characters Conference—this time as it heads west to LA. The #140Conf LA conference is not only exciting as it’s the next iteration in the growing 140 Conference empire, but also because it’s the birthplace of the 1st Annual NOW Awards. Tinker will be powering the NOW awards and is thrilled to team up with Pulver and co. to produce the first-ever awards voted by the Tweeple and for the Tweeple.

What are the NOW awards? The NOW Awards recognize celebrities and ordinary people who are making Twitter matter. From media and politics to technology and business, these game changers embody the qualities that are making Twitter and the emerging NOW internet a growing force in the world.

Why the NOW awards? Because we want to recognize the All-stars, the Mavericks and the Game Changers who are making Twitter what it is today.

Who are the NOW awards nominees? Can be anybody. Celebrities or ordinary people, it doesn’t matter. Only requirement: NOW awards recipients must be actively transforming the Twitterverse.

How are the NOW awards chosen? By YOU—the Tweeple. Vote for anyone you think is changing the world, one tweet at a time. Click here for voting rules and regulations.

When are the NOW awards? Voting begins on September 29th at 10:00 AM (EST) and ends on October 24th at 11:59 PM (EST). NOW Awards recipients will be announced at the #140Conf Networking Reception on October 27th.

Where are the NOW awards? Visit the Tinker voting page here to cast your vote.
